You don’t have to do this alone!

It’s a shock to the system when cancer enters your life.  Whether you’re the patient, a family member, a friend, or a care provider, the prospect of living with this most-feared disease can be overwhelming.

Fortunately, none of us has to walk that particular walk alone.  Cancer Support Community, with locations worldwide, provides FREE support to anyone affected by cancer!  (You might know of some of these loving places as Gilda’s Club, or The Wellness Community.)  Whether you come for the wide array of classes or workshops, to participate in a support group, or, here in Nashville, to be part of Gilda’s Gang and train for a 1/2 marathon, you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for to help you live well, even when cancer is part of your life!  I must confess that, although I was a long-time volunteer at Gilda’s Club Nashville, and, as a social worker, I understood the benefits of support communities, it took me a minute to decide to become a member.  Maybe it was the shock of the diagnosis.  Maybe it was pride.  Maybe it was, dare I say it (?), shame.  Whatever it was, when I was ready, Gilda’s Club Nashville was ready for me!  I joined a Wellness Group (support group for those who have cancer), participated in a workshop, and even wrote one that I’m hoping to present in the new year!

If the walls could talk at Gilda’s Club Nashville, here’s what I know they would say:

“People find friends here.”

“People get answers here.”

“People can just BE here.”

“Even kids have a place here.”

“Cancer is spoken here.”

Cancer is what I call an “Equal Opportunity Offender.”  The Cancer Support Community is what I call “The Switzerland of Cancer.”  Check them out and see what I mean.  And remember:  you don’t have to do this alone!
